Visitors to Thasos (or Thassos) are treated to explorations of natural wonders, archaeological sites, religious landmarks as well as culinary delights. The deep blue water of the Aegean Sea surrounds it all, serving as a constant reminder that a pleasant swim is never far away. At the end of a busy day, travellers can visit the main hub at Limenas for shopping, dining and drinking until late.

Thasos is home to ancient and medieval history, with museums housing plenty of Ancient Greek sculpture and a monastery that was established over 800 years ago. You can even climb up to Ypsarion, the highest point on the island. While not as famous as the other Greek islands, Thasos is a hidden gem of the Aegean.

    Archaeological Site in Aliki

Retreat into the aura of antiquity

There may not be much left in the site of the ancient kingdom of Alyki, but the ghosts of lives past seem to linger as you stroll along the coastline. Walls remain where houses stood nearly 3,000 years ago, providing a glimpse of what life was like during the Hellenic Period. Signs provide information on what you can see here, so you can enjoy a relaxing and informative stroll.

Once a thriving port where the residents mostly traded marble, this spot by the sea offers views of marble rock just off-shore. You can also find the remains of 5th-century basilicas higher up.

    Shopping on Limenas

Bring home souvenirs of a memorable trip

All kinds of artisanal creations abound on this vibrant avenue, like traditional candies and olive oil. Aside from food, you can also browse locally made clothes, shoes and jewellery.

The art and souvenir shops along the pedestrian street are refined and, unlike the kitschy shops you find in more touristic Greek destinations, offer the kind of shopping experience you could only find on an island as small and tucked away as Thasos. An evening on Limenas is a great way to mingle with locals and indulge in some window shopping.
